Creating a special, sacred space for yourself will help you to expand your sense of wonder and appreciation for life.
Your sacred space is a place where you can push pause and do a little reflection or it can be a place where you can take a few breaths in peace and quiet while going about your day.
Your sacred space doesn’t need to be an entire room, it just needs to be a designated area in your home where you can take a minute, a self-time-out. You can use this space for meditation, prayer, or reflection. It’s a place where you can find your highest self, practice gratitude, and connect to something higher than yourself. It’s a place where you can show up for yourself!
Select a place that is not in a high-traffic area of your home. Someplace where it is a little quieter. Someplace where somebody isn’t going to be coming in and out while you are there. The area should not be a place where you currently do other tasks for your household. For instance, you do not want your sacred space on the desk where you pay your bills or at the kitchen table where other people in your home are in and out of the room.
Believe it or not, many people use a closet or a piece of furniture with a shelf. Another quick and easy idea is getting a comfy pillow that you can put anywhere you want and use as a make-shift sacred space. You will get to the point where all you have to do is see your pillow and the space you put it in will transform.
Another great option is a quiet corner somewhere in your house.
Arranging your space
- The first step is to make sure you unclutter the area.
- Find something in your home that is meaningful to you and put it in your space.
- Add a potted plant.
- Use an old cutting board to display essential oil bottles or crystals.
- Use a ceramic coaster or a terra cotta dish to burn incense.
- Bring in your prayer beads.
- Put a few of your favorite books in the space.
- Bring in your favorite devotional figurines.
- If possible, have some of your favorite music or meditations nearby.
- Add a salt lamp if you have one.
- Check the dollar store for those small strands of battery-operated lights.
- Spread out a cloth to display your things on.
- Use nature-y things like wood slices or leaves or flowers in your area.
- Use a small essential oil diffuser.
- Put a journal in your space in case you feel like journaling.
- Your space will evolve over time. Things will come in and things will come out.
When you enter your space, get into the habit of removing your shoes. This little ritual will signify leaving your stress outside of this sacred space. When we begin to take care in entering our space and consciously leaving the stress out, it will bring a real sense of calm, relaxation, and peace. Taking off your shoes designates that space as revered and separate.
I recommend smudging your space before the first use and periodically after that. You can use sage or rosemary or sweetgrass or any plant you consider sacred and clearing. This will rid the space of negative or residual energy.
Lighting a candle when you enter your space is another good ritual. Light your flame with intention, take a few deep breaths, and meditate or say a prayer. Dim the lighting and just use your candles (whether flame or flameless) or your twinkle lights.
It doesn’t matter whether you spend an hour in your sacred space or a minute. Get into the habit of entering this space—it’s wonderful for you.
